What is Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation (PNF)?

PNF is a highly effective stretching technique that uses a combination of gentle muscle contractions and relaxation to help you stretch deeper, increase flexibility, and improve range of motion. It works with your body’s natural reflexes to release tension and enhance mobility.

How does it work?

PNF stretching follows a three-part sequence: First, the muscle is gently stretched. Then, it’s engaged in a brief isometric contraction (holding the muscle without moving it). Finally, the muscle is relaxed and stretched again—this time, usually deeper—into a new range of motion. This method helps “teach” your muscles to safely lengthen and release tension.

What types of movements and techniques are used during a session?

During an assisted stretching session, you’ll experience a combination of gentle, guided movements specifically tailored to your body’s needs. Whether you’re dealing with tightness, imbalances, or simply looking to improve flexibility, the techniques are customized to target the areas that need the most attention. Two common PNF techniques include:

  • Hold-Relax: The muscle is first passively stretched, then you’ll contract it gently against resistance. After releasing the contraction, the stretch is deepened.

  • Hold-Relax-Swing: This method combines static and isometric stretching with more dynamic, flowing movements to help increase mobility and fluidity.

These techniques work by tapping into your body’s natural neurological responses—such as autogenic inhibition (where a muscle relaxes after being contracted) and reciprocal inhibition (where one muscle relaxes while its opposing muscle contracts).

Each session is personalized to meet your specific goals, whether it’s targeting areas of chronic tension, improving range of motion, or enhancing overall flexibility.
